No fewer than eight persons including a pregnant woman were, yesterday, confirmed dead in a motor accident along Gbongan/Ibadan express road in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. It was gathered that
the accident occurred when a blue Golf car with number plate Osun AG 19 EDE coming from Ede somersaulted and landed on another car with number plate Abuja KUJ 74 AJ and a white Toyota Hiace bus with number plate ABUJA XR 930 ABC ran into them.
The state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr Imoh Etuk, who confirmed the accident, said the corpses had been deposited at the morgue of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
He said officials of the FRSC in conjunction with the Osun State Ambulance Service (O’Ambulance), and the Police did their best to rescue the victims, stressing that they were rushed to the hospital where they were confirmed dead.
Etuk said the identities of the victims could not be ascertained yet, noting that officials of the FRSC were making efforts to contact their relatives through the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW’s manifest.
He also cautioned drivers against over speeding, just as he charged them to observe all precautionary measures while on high ways.
He said the state command of the FRSC would do its best to ensure that road accidents are reduced in all parts of the state, urging all drivers to also co-operate with the FRSC to make the state a safe one for all road users.
The accident affected commercial activities in the area as many traders who had gone to the popular Owode market where the deceased were also going returned home as a mark of honour for the deceased.
