US report says Boko Haram may have anti-aircraft missiles

From Punch
A report by a committee of  the United States House of Representatives has linked the  fundamentalist Islamist sect, Boko Haram to al Shabaab, the terror group that carried out the September 21 Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya.
The  report dated September 13, 2013 and entitled, ‘Boko Haram: Growing Threat to the US Homeland’, also acknowledged the growing relationship between the Nigerian sect and another terror group, the Al Qaeda in the land of the Islamic Maghreb.
The  39-page report noted that “while there is no evidence that al Qaeda’s core in Afghanistan and Pakistan commands Boko Haram’s operations, it is clear from the words of multiple US officials and  media reports  that Boko Haram is supportive of, and supported by Al Qaeda networks such as AQIM.”
It noted that “it is the unity of ideology and mutual hatred for the West between the Al Qaeda networks that exposes the danger Boko Haram poses to the U.S Homeland.”

The committee described Boko Haram as a “hardened and sophisticated terror network” that required  multiple simultenous local and international efforts to enhance the capacity and capability of the the Nigerian Police and the military to curtail its activities.

It said there was an urgent need by the US to designate the sect as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation because it has shown  no signs of ending its aggression  against the government of Nigeria and the Western world.

The commiteee wrote, “The world is coming to know more about Boko Haram; their intentions, what they’re capable of, and who is supporting them.

“The US Intelligence Community is working to erase the gaps in our understanding of Boko Haram, but it is already evident they are a serious threat to US interests and potentially to the US Homeland.

Okada man flings himself in front of oncoming trailer over seizure of his bike

A desperate, angry Okada man tried to kill himself yesterday Thursday September 26th by throwing himself in front of a trailer and then, an SUV after his motorcycle was seized in Oyo State.

According to a report by Nigerian Tribune, the unidentified Okada man was stopped by officers of the Oyo State Commercial Vehicle Registration Unit and upon checking his papers, alleged they were fake, after which they seized his Okada.

According to eyewitnesses the man pleaded with the officers for a while but when his begging fell on deaf ears, he attempted suicide by flinging himself in front of two on coming vehicles.

Fortunately there were people around the area to rescue him both times. He later went into shock and started foaming from the mouth. Some policemen arrived the scene and took the man to the hospital

Graphic photos: Train kills man (cuts him into pieces) in Oshodi

Some eyewitnesses said the man threw himself in front of the train, some said he was just walking across the railway track with his friends when a train coming from Agege approached early yesterday morning around the Bolade area of Oshodi. Don't know which one is accurate but there's one fact; the unidentified man was crushed into pieces by the train. When I say into pieces, I mean head off, hand off,  leg off, cut into two from the stomach. Horrific!

Please I beg you don't open the photos, it will give you nightmares. But if you insist, see them after the cut..

Will Smith's no discipline plan for raising kids:Jaden Smith: School's Out Forever

Jaden Smith has some pretty strong opinions about the formal education system for someone who doesn't participate in it.

Most teenagers think they know it all, but Jaden Smith is taking it to the next level. The child star says formal education is worthless and that kids should drop out of school to get some real smarts in the School of Life.
The actor-rapper-dancer, who at the ripe old age of 15 obviously knows everything there is to know — and is reportedly dating Kylie Jenner — told fans on Twitter that school is for fools and the world would be better off with a population full of dropouts.
Jada Pinkett Smith lets her husband Will Smith do whatever he wants as long as he can look at himself in the mirror — and that attitude extends toward the couple's two kids, Willow and Jaden.
In an interview with Metro to promote their new joint project After Earth, Will and Jaden talked about the family's discipline plan for the kids — or the lack thereof. Basically, there is no punishment in the Smith household!
"We don't do punishment," Will explained.
"The way that we deal with our kids is, they are responsible for their lives. Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible and the concept of punishment, our experience has been — it has a little too much of a negative quality."

I’ll Leave This Earth As A ‘Never Married’ Woman – Oprah Winfrey

59-year-old TV legend/actress, Oprah Winifred who has been dating 62-year-old Stedman Graham for nearly 30years said she’s sure she will leave the world as a woman who ‘never got married’.

The Billionaire mogul when asked if she will leave this earth as a never-married woman said:
“Yes, “Yeah, I think that’s my final answer.”
“I think that it’s interesting that you would ask it because I thought about it again at Tina Turner’s wedding,” Oprah revealed, referring to the singer’s July nuptials.
“Because Tina was like, ‘Oprah, you need to do this. You need to do it,’” she continued. “And I was just thinking, ‘Well, OK, would things really be different?’ And no, I don’t think so.”
“If you ever interviewed him, he would tell you that had we married, we would not be together today,” Oprah said candidly of Stedman. “Because he’s a traditional man and this is a very untraditional relationship. And I think it’s acceptable as a relationship, but if I had the title ‘wife,’ I think there would be other expectations for what a wife is and what a wife does

Kim Kardashian Bored With Family Life Already

We knew that wouldn’t take long! Having a baby may be a miraculous event, but how can changing diapers possibly compare to being in the limelight constantly? It doesn’t, at least if you are Kim Kardashian, that is! Just three months after giving birth to her daughter (and going into hiding), rumor now has it that the star of The Keeping Up With the Kardashians is bored with family life!
A new baby is supposed to bring a family joy, not boredom! But apparently, for Kim Kardashian, family life is not all that it is cracked up to be. According to Radar Online, Kardashian is already moaning and groaning that she is bored with her new life. In fact, one source told them that while Kim does love her daughter, “She’s really bored! She misses going out all the time to shop or eat and have people in public fawn all over her.”
Bored? Really? Aren’t newborns supposed to keep new mothers busy? Oh yeah, they do for most of us, who don’t have the luxury of nannies, or care to have them for that matter. Oh, and get this one…Kanye West is also getting the blame for Kardashian’s boredom. “Kim really likes the attention she gets from people when she goes out in public or even online, but since Kanye wants her to be more selective about what she’s doing it isn’t as interactive for her and she misses her old life. She wouldn’t trade the baby for anything, of course, but she is saying she is bored right now,” the insider went on to add.
Does anyone else already feel sorry for baby North? We sure do!
What do you think of Kim Kardashian’s boredom? We know you have an opinion and we want to hear from you! Comment below to share your thoughts with us.

EXCLUSIVE: TB Joshua Speaks On The Issue Of Boko Haram

Getting Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua to speak on pressing national issues came with its obstacles. But with persistence, Kehinde Oyetimi got the popular pastor to speak.

See what he said on Boko Haram and other issues below:

Ques: The nature of insecurity in Nigeria is bothering everyone. Many people have given various pieces of advice concerning this issue. Will Boko Haram not end in Nigeria?

Ans: We are fighting flesh and blood and not the spirit being that causes stealing, killing and destruction. Until we begin to fight that spirit being that causes killing, stealing and destruction, the battle will not end. Our neighbours are not our enemies. Remember that our neighbours can be our friends; our neighbours can be our enemies; our neighbours can be those who do not share the same faith with us. It is never the will of anyone to kill themselves because of anything unless there is the spirit to kill at work.

Ques: You prophesied that from February 27 to April, 2011 there would be serious challenges that would
threaten the April 2011 election. You called on the President to intervene in the political crisis in Oyo state because the governor would not be able to represent him in winning the election in the state. You said the president should look beyond PDP for success in his election, that his personality would win the election.

You said the PDP would lose in Ekiti and Osun. You said God showed you that a group would attack people in the Northern part of the country, before and after Christmas in 2010. You predicted the bomb blasts in Abuja barracks and other states. These prophecies which you gave in September, 2010 to those in authority have all come to pass.
You also stated that prayers could avert them. You predicted the Dana plane crash which was published in February this year. How do you see these visions?

Ans: Romans 10 verse 9 states that “he that believes has eternal life.” By this statement, the believing means possessing. The instant that you believe, you have whatever you ask that is in accordance to the will of God. The instant that you believe that thing that is according to God’s will, it is yours. The instant you believe, you become a possessor of the father’s nature. It you confess with your mouth, if you believe in your heart that God has raised Jesus from the dead, in this way, there is a level of confession and believing. It is deep, deeper, deepest.

Everyone that believes has power to prophesy. The belief in our heart is released by faith. The belief to see visions is released by faith out of our mouth.

Ques: For many years people have argued that you have no biological child. But now, we hear your daughter graduated in Law from the London School of Economics with second class upper division. What do you have to say?

Ans: What do you want me to say?

Ques: Is she your biological daughter?

Ans: (Cuts in) She is my daughter. In fact she is my first daughter. She is my biological child. Those of you who say I have no child, we are yet to hear from your children.

Ques: There are so many pastors with big churches that have their children being involved in running the affairs of those places. Don’t you want your daughter to be involved in church activities? After her graduation, what is her next line of action?

Ans: Due to her excellent performance, she was given admission to study for her masters in International Law in New York University; she also got admission into LSE ( London School of Economics) and also to UCLA and other universities in Colombia for her masters.

Ques: You went to Jerusalem many years ago. After you returned, there have been miracles taking place in your church. What happened to you there?

Ans: I have been in the field of God’s work before that trip. I only went there to see where my father, Jesus Christ went, the things he touched.

Ques: What are the next events that would happen in Nigeria?

Ans: You want me to book an appointment with God? I will do so. Come next time; I will tell you.

Fans Tell Ex-Beauty Queen Muna Abii: Quit Music! It's Not Your Calling!!!

Munachi Abii, also known as Muna Abii, became popular when she emerged the winner of the 2007 edition of the prestigious Most Beautiful Girl in Nigerian, MBGN, organized by Ben Bruce led Silverbird Group.

After the competition, she gained spotlights and grabbed an endorsement deal with popular toilet soap as its brand ambassador. The same product once had Nollywood star, Genevieve Nnaji, as its brand ambassador until she was dropped.

As an ex-beauty queen and a model too, Muna Abii was unable to force herself into the minds of many Nigerians as an A-list star. Later, she delved into music, though she has reportedly been doing music right from her secondary days, but she was not known with that profession.

When it came to public knowledge that the light-skinned pretty damsel was into rap, many crossed their fingers to see if she would make any impact in that field.

Some months ago, she was in a hot altercation with respected Nigerian rapper, Mode Nine, which almost ruined her music career. She was reportedly forced to apologize to the ‘king’ of Nigeria rap music after the face-off.

Years after being in the music industry without getting her way into the mainstream, some fans have lambasted Muna and have also advised her to quit music and look for other profession to do because they alleged that her calling is not in music.

A cross-section of people spoken to by First Weekly reveals that they still wonder what the former beauty is still doing in the highly competitive music industry in Nigeria, where many talented artistes are struggling to make a name for themselves and have no gotten the breakthrough.

“I wonder what she (Muna) is still doing in the music industry, she should not waste her time anymore doing music because there is no place for her in the industry,” one music buff told us.

Commenting on one of her interviews online, one ’Mr Gentleman’, who commented on a popular blog wrote, “She’s beautiful and high spirited, but not a very good music artiste. Quit music Muna, and move on to other profitable stuff. You’ll do well, I’m sure.”
Another said, “music is not her calling, but I know she has a passion for it. She is beautiful anyday.”

It is believed that Muna is still passionate and optimistic that she would make it big in the music industry. As at press time, effort to speak with her or her management were not successful as our calls were not picked when contacted.

SHOCKING: Access Bank demands N1million for employment; GTB asks trainees to write own obituaries(True Or Not)?

Banks in Nigeria, including GTB and Access Bank, are making illegal and unreasonable demands from people they intend to hire.

Having spent almost two unproductive years at home after graduation, Evelyn was badly in need of a job. After passing the aptitude test and first interview, she was pretty confident as she walked out of her second interview for a management trainee position
at Access Bank.
But her confidence immediately atrophies like an ice cube thrown into a burning fire when she was told, over the telephone, by an official of the bank that she needed to source a total of N1 million from at least 10 new customers within a week as a prerequisite for being employed.
Her parents immediately kicked against her continuing with the recruitment process saying it was exploitative.  But the thought of having to sit at home for an indefinite period in search of another job was far scarier for Evelyn. She was determined to meet the bank’s demand.
Hard as she tried, she could only get eight people to open new accounts with the bank. Two days later she got a call from the bank telling her she didn’t make the cut.
“In Access Bank it has to be ten over ten or nothing,” the voice at the other end of the phone said.
Evelyn was devastated. She felt used and dumped.
“After the second interview, I thought I already had the job,” she said.
In fact she was called for the third interview, which is usually a formality, according to an Access Bank source.
John, another applicant, said he didn’t feel comfortable raising N1 million as a prerequisite for employment.
“I remembered telling myself this was nonsense. Why would they ask me to get N1 million before I was employed? I didn’t even bother to try.”
Some of applicants who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES said the bank gave them ten account-opening booklets each carrying Access Bank employee numbers for this purpose.
“When I say the employee numbers on the account-opening booklet, I was confused. Does it mean that I’m running around for someone else to take the credit,” wondered another applicant who raised N900,000.00 and was not employed.
Evelyn, who said she is now doing what she described as her dream job, told PREMIUM TIMES one of those who opened an account with her went through a lot of hassles when she tried to withdraw the money she deposited.
“She wasn’t given a debit card or chequebook. They kept telling her at the branch that they have issues with her account when she went to withdraw the money she deposited. After paying several visits to the branch over three months she could only manage to withdraw part of the money she deposited.”
Access Bank says the practise of asking applicants to generate N1 million within one week is to prepare them for “the rigour of the highly competitive market.”
The bank’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Segun Fafore, says only candidates that have passed the entry requirement are asked to raise this amount.
“It is part of the training. It is part of the recruitment process. This person will certainly go to the training school. It is just the practical aspect before you go for the four months training programme,” he said.
However, none of those who spoke to this paper were called to resume at the bank’s training school. Despite excelling at all the pre-recruitment evaluations, they were specifically rejected because they raised less than the N1 million asked by the bank.
Employment bond
Access Bank has been courting controversies for some time now due to some of its recruitment practices. In what is a blatant disregard of the country’s labour laws, the bank makes new employees sign bonds that force them to stay in the bank’s employ willy-nilly for at least two years.
Access Bank says it does this to protect the “heavy investment” it makes in training its staff. It says due to the quality of training its staff get they are usually poached by both local and international firms.
“The bank invest heavily in building the competence and capacity of its staff to a level of admiration that matches what is available in the global financial community,” Mr Fafore says.
“Following market tendencies, it is not surprising that with this kind of investment in its people other institutions, financial and non-financial, within and outside Nigeria encroach on the bank’s School of Banking Excellence.”
Mr Fafore says the bank designed its employment contract to “stem the tide” of employee poaching.
Alarmed, Lagos lawyer and frontline human rights advocate, Jiti Ogunye, describes the practice as “shady, irresponsible and illegal.”
“From employment and banking perspective it was illegal for the bank to compel people who are not employees of the bank to discharge banking duties,” he said.
“Having compelled these applicants to go and be scouting for customers for them as a condition of being offered employment, a relationship of implied agency has crystallised between the bank on one hand and those prospective employees. So the bank has made them her agent by sending them out to go and bring customers so the question there is if the bank had made these people her agent how did the bank remunerate them at the end of the day?
It flies in the face of constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens. A bank is expected to be a repository of integrity. This is nothing but obtaining property by false pretence. This is nothing but fraud.”
Obituaries and epitaphs
Allegations of malpractices and abuses have dogged recruitment processes and staff training in the Nigerian banking sector. For instance in 2011, a group of Guaranty Trust Bank’s entry level trainees were expelled on the last day of training for what the bank described as  “[contravening] several basic programme rules that include professional conduct.”
But several members of Sapphire, as the class was nicknamed, said the consultant instructor during the training, Tutu Sholeye of Learners and Trainers, traumatised the group with an unending string of vile comments, verbal abuse and attack on their self-esteem.
They told this paper that they were asked to write their obituaries and epitaphs as part of the training regime.
“We were shocked when she told us to write our obituaries and epitaphs. And it didn’t end there; whatever you wrote will be used as an excuse to rain more insults on you,” said Taye, still visibly angry two years after the experience.
For instance, a trainee who smokes and had indicated to live up to 85 years in his obituary was told by the trainer: “how do you expect to live that long with the worthless life you’re living?”
Learners and Trainers website says it focuses on the “attitude training and personal development” rather than focus on “skills and knowledge training.”
Ms Sholeye declined to speak with PREMIUM TIMES. She said as a consultant, it was unprofessional for her to speak about what happened during the training.
Peter Ogunnubi, a psychiatrist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, says this style of training is “archaic and barbaric.”
“It is a form of mental torture that can lead to post-traumatic and personality disorder.” He says this is even more so because the trainees didn’t get the job.
Guaranty Trust Bank says this approach to staff training has brought out the best in its employees.
“The curriculum adopted for the training programme which all employees must undertake, has been in use for the same period and you will no doubt agree with me that our Bank has the finest, most professional and knowledgeable human capital in the country today,” says Pascal Or, the bank’s official in charge of Brand Management.
Regulatory laxity
Those wronged by unfair recruitment may have to look further from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, if they hoped to get succour for the wrong done to them.
CBN Director of Corporate Communications, Ugochukwu Okoroafor, says the CBN cannot act on hearsay.
“Please note that the allegations have not come to our attention with concrete evidence. This is necessary to enable us take action,” he said.
“There is nothing the CBN can do on the basis of mere hearsay, other than moral suasion,” he added.
Mr Okoroafor, says the CBN prohibits profit and liability targeting by banks and other unethical practices.
“Unfortunately, these are not things you can pick up from financial records when conducting bank examinations. Neither can interviews with Bank Management or staff reveal them.”
However Mr Okoroafor said the bank encourages whistleblowers to come with names, dates and evidence of malpractices.
*** The names of the bank informants in this story have been changed to protect their identities. All of them still work with different banks in the country and fear they might be victimised by their employers.
